Joel Edgerton Used His Tiny Role In Star Wars To Land Big Hollywood Meetings

For movie fans, Joel Edgerton is now a household name, but it wasn't always so. Once upon a time he was just a young, relatively unknown Australian actor before he landed the small part of Owen Lars in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. While that role was so small some of you may have forgot he was even in Star Wars, the actor was able to parlay it into getting big Hollywood meetings, as he explained:

Star Wars allowed me, in that 18-month period while they were putting the movie together, to bluff my way into any meeting I wanted. 'I'm in Star Wars. I'm not telling you that I'm only in it for five minutes and that I don't have a lightsaber.' I would have meetings with people, and let them believe I was a larger part of the story than I actually was. That was a good time and allowed me to get my first job out of the States.

He may have played Luke Skywalker's eventual foster parent, but given that level of hustle you would think that Joel Edgerton was really more suited to be hanging out in the Mos Eisley Cantina. People in Hollywood knew that he was cast in the next Star Wars prequel film, but given the film's level of secrecy, the size of the part was not public knowledge. So as far as most people knew, he had a huge role where he wielded a lightsaber.

Nobody in the industry wants to be late to the party on an up and coming actor who is about to have a breakout role in the biggest film on the calendar. Joel Edgerton knew that, and he smartly let people believe his role was bigger than it was. He chose not to reveal the blink and you miss it nature of his part, as he revealed to Total Film.

He presumably made a good enough impression during the meetings that it was no big deal, but it must have been somewhat jarring for the people in those meetings when the trailers for Attack of the Clones started hitting, and Joel Edgerton was nowhere to be seen. But at that point you've got to admire the actor's moxie.

Just having a part in Star Wars is a huge deal for anyone's career by itself, but Joel Edgerton clearly saw it as the kind of opportunity that you maximize to its fullest potential, likely giving himself a huge leg up as his career moved forward by getting his foot in the door to these kinds of meetings. And he is still forever a part of the Star Wars universe. Maybe he'll even show up again if we ever get a Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff film or TV series on Disney+.

Nowadays Joel Edgerton doesn't need to bluff his way into big Hollywood meetings by name-dropping Star Wars; he should be able to get in all on his own just off the strength of his name. From big films like Black Mass, The Great Gatsby and Red Sparrow to smaller films like Loving, Joel Edgerton is a recognizable name that has proved his chops.

Joel Edgerton has also proved that he is a filmmaker to watch behind the camera as well. After making his directorial debut with 2015's The Gift, Joel Edgerton returned this year with Boy Erased. The film is about gay conversion therapy and has received plenty of critical acclaim, including for Joel Edgerton, who both directed and adapted the screenplay for the film.

The Heartbreaking Star Wars Connection The Last Jedi Makes To A New Hope

History has a way of repeating itself, sometimes directly and sometimes in subtler ways. This can be true in fictional universes too, particularly with the Star Wars franchise. From a lot of folks saying "I've got a bad feeling about this" to two different dictatorships building their own planet-destroying machines, there have been many instances of repeated tropes, symbols, etc, within a galaxy far, far away. Now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available on home video, it's easier to spot more of these similarities, and one fan recently noticed when re-watching the movie was that Luke Skywalker's heroic journey ended the same way it began all the way back in A New Hope: with a projection.

When we met Luke Skywalker in A New Hope, he was a simple farm boy who wanted a life of adventure and excitement, and his wish was finally granted when he came to own C-3PO and R2-D2 and accidentally discovered the message from Princess Leia Organa asking Obi-Wan Kenobi for help hidden within the latter droid. If Luke hadn't stumbled upon it, he might have remained a moisture farmer on Tatooine for the rest of his life. Fast-forward a little over three decades to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, even though Luke was stranded on Ahch-To, he was able help his sister one last time by Force projecting himself all the way to Ahch-To and distracting the First Order forces led by Kylo Ren so that the Resistance survivors could escape aboard the Millennium Falcon. So Luke's journey from farmer to galactic legend came full circle, from a certain point of view.

This "projection" observation from JM McNab has since made its way around the web in the last few days, and it eventually reached Mark Hamill's eyes, leading him to share the connection with his followers on Twitter.

While Luke Skywalker sacrificed his life in Star Wars: The Last Jedi to keep the Resistance going, this may not be the last time we see him on the big screen. He is a Jedi after all, and like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda before him, it's possible he may reappear as a Force ghost in Episode IX. However, Mark Hamill did recently state that Carrie Fisher's passing has tarnished his ability to enjoy the Star Wars franchise to the fullest, so there's no guarantee that Hamill will don the Jedi robes one more time. In any case, as far as Luke's life is concerned, he left behind an impressive legacy, and it's quite fitting that his final act of heroism was similar to how he set out on that path all those years ago.

With this summers Hobbs and Shaw release, the Fast and the Furious franchise is officially expanding into spinoff territory. And why not? The Universal property has made the studio over $5 billion in box office earnings worldwide. After Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham have their own blockbuster moment this summer, the next spinoff may shift its gear to techie badass Cipher, from 2017s The Fate of the Furious played by Charlize Theron.

In addition to Hobbs & Shaw, and the upcoming ninth and tenth installments from the main franchise, Universal is reportedly exploring a female-fronted Fast and Furious spinoff built around Charlize Therons character Cipher. Universal reportedly has been promised three Fast and Furious spinoffs, including a previously announced female-fronted film. Is this the film starring Charlize Therons Cipher or an additional project?

A few months back, Vin Diesel said a female-led Fast movie was officially in the works from two of the Captain Marvel writers Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsay Beer. Furthers details have not yet been announced, but many assumed Michelle Rodriguezs Letty would be leading the film since shes been the franchises leading woman since 2001. So THR's new report about Cipher is especially surprising.

Michelle Rodriguez has also been vocal about her past disappointment with the series treatment of female characters. This could have led Universal to think up two female-led movies, one with Letty and one with Cipher, they could be in the same movie or Rodriguez may not be involved in the upcoming Fast and the Furious spin-offs at all.

In 2017, Charlize Theron joined the franchise as the main villain Cipher, a cyber terrorist who blackmails Vin Diesels Dominic into betraying his crew. In Fate of the Furious it was also revealed that she played a larger role in events in other films in the franchise, making her a key character to perhaps explored in another movie.

Not to mention the impressive track record the Oscar winner has with fronting action flicks in the past. Theron has played the lead in Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde and The Huntsman: Winters War. Another notable connection here is the director of Hobbs & Shaw also helmed Atomic Blonde, so if Universal is planning a continued collaboration with David Leitch, the pair may jump at the opportunity to work with one another again.

Following Therons debut in the Fast and the Furious franchise, she seemed open to reprising her role in another film, hinting at impending conversations with Universal. Perhaps it lead to a more meaty role for the actress to take on in a future?

We're still about a year away from the release of Top Gun: Maverick, but we do know some of the actors who are on the highway to the Danger Zone. So far the confirmed cast is made up of legacy characters from the original like Tom Cruise's Maverick and Val Kilmer's Iceman, as well as Miles Teller, who joins the franchise as Goose's son. Now the production is looking to add an Oscar-winning actress to this long-awaited sequel. She may have starred in The Rocketeer years ago, but Jennifer Connelly still has the need for speed and is being eyed to play the female-lead in Top Gun: Maverick.

Jennifer Connelly, who won an Oscar for her work in A Beautiful Mind, would play a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base where all the flyboy shenanigans are taking place. Negotiations are in the early stages, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but should she sign on, Jennifer Connelly would be the female lead in the film opposite Tom Cruise's Pete Mitchell. The actress has never worked with Tom Cruise before, but she has worked with Top Gun: Maverick's director Joseph Kosinski on last year's Only the Brave.

Just given the description of the character and her being the female lead, one has to assume that she will probably be the love interest for Tom Cruise's Maverick. This naturally begs the question, what about Charlotte Blackwood? The romance between Kelly McGillis' Charlie and Tom Cruise's Maverick was a big part of the first film, and when Top Gun ended, you presumed that they would be together. There is no guarantee that the role Jennifer Connelly is that of a love interest for Maverick, but presuming it is, that would seem to indicate that Kelly McGillis will not be in the film, and that Charlie and Maverick didn't wind up together after all. Sequels always complicate happily ever afters.

The expectations for Top Gun: Maverick are sky high, built up over thirty plus years, and even producer Jerry Bruckheimer has acknowledged that this sequel has to be good. And although there are bad films with great casts, adding great talent puts a film in a great position to succeed. Jennifer Connelly is a super talented actress, so she would be an awesome addition to Top Gun: Maverick. The character sounds fun too; a single mother running a bar near a Navy base probably has to deal with all kinds of nonsense, so she should be more than up to the task of sparring with Maverick.
