Regular Movie Rules No Longer Apply To The Fast & Furious Franchise

Similar to the Mission: Impossible franchise, the Fast and the Furious franchise has been able to endure for nearly two decades now, and unlike most franchises, the entries have arguably gotten better. There are so far eight films in the main series, with two more on the way. But before that, fans are being treated to the first Fast and the Furious spinoff, the appropriately named Hobbs and Shaw, which sees Dwayne Johnson and Jason Stathams respective characters reuniting for another round of beating up bad guys. It looks just like the kind of action-packed buddy comedy youd want from these two, but more importantly, Hobbs and Shaw reaffirms, if not permanently settles the issue, that the Fast and the Furious universe is no longer operating in any semblance of reality. Were knee deep in fantastical territory with the potential to go even further.

While the Fast and the Furious movies, like every other action-themed franchise, have been set in a heightened reality, the franchise started off relatively tame compared to the most recent entries. Dominic Toretto, Brian OConnor and the other starring characters used their street racing skills for fun and to pull off heists, all while preaching the importance of family on the side. Cars were the focus and the adventures were exciting, but not terribly exaggerated.

But then a shift started to occur. For me, the biggest tell that the Fast and the Furious franchise was morphing into a more straightforward action franchise, albeit still revolving around cars, was in Fast Five when Dom and his team dragged a bank vault through downtown Rio de Janeiro. By Fast & Furious 6, the protagonists were working together to stop a deadly device from being sold to the highest bidder, and in Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious, they essentially saved the world, all while driving their badass vehicles; sometimes not even on the ground!

These racers are now basically superheroes, but without the fancy costumes or special abilities. Well, except super strength and endurance. After all, Dominic Toretto was able to life a car all by himself in Furious 7, and in The Fate of the Furious, Luke Hobbs curled a concrete bench, easily shrugged off rubber bullets and pushed a torpedo as it slid across ice. This dude might as well just call himself Black Adam.

Which brings us to Hobbs and Shaw, where the eponymous characters will face off against Idris Elbas Brixton, a terrorist mastermind. Wed known for a while that Elba would be playing the spinoffs main antagonist, but the first trailer revealed that hes been genetically and cybernetically enhanced to be bulletproof and superhuman. Other Fast and the Furious villains have used special technology, but not to enhance their own bodies. Even if you ignore my comment about Dominic and Lukes physical feats, the franchise is seemingly using Brixton to say, Hey, superpowers are officially on the table!

I dont doubt that there are folks out there who wish that the Fast and the Furious franchise had stuck to its street racing roots, but the fact of the matter is that Universal pivoting to a more conventional action approach has paid off. Both Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious have grossed over $1 billion worldwide, and the later entries have been met with more positive critical reception than its predecessors. Hobbs and Shaw is building on what the main movies have become and turned the craziness up a notch or two, which also includes driving underneath a semi-truck, knocking over cars with an armored flatbed and jumping out of a window to take down some goons running down the side of a building with cables. Whew, Im winded just thinking about all that.

Even if you prefer the racing aspect of the Fast and the Furious franchise, theres no denying that these movies tossing out the conventional rules that opens the door to more possibilities. If Universal had kept these movies strictly about racing and heists, the film series either would have ended a while back or the current entries probably wouldnt be as well received. This way, even though these adventures are no longer rooted in any kind of realism, these stakes have been raised so that theres no shortage of challenges the protagonists deal with or weird experiences they could go through.

If Brixton has been enhanced to be more powerful than a regular human being, why couldnt the same happen to to one of our heroes? Weve seen certain kinds of computer software put the world at risk in the most recent Fast and the Furious movies, so why not throw AI or even robots into the mix? I would say the skys the limit, but since its been repeatedly suggested that the Mission: Impossible series should head to space, why couldnt the Fast and the Furious series do the same?

Right now, there are only two main Fast and the Furious movies left to be released, but thanks to Hobbs and Shaw and the confirmed female-fronted spinoff, this could morph the franchise into a cinematic universe, thus allowing this world to continue after Fast & Furious 10 drops. Moviegoers overall are clearly accepting of this new direction the franchise has taken, and Hobbs and Shaw will be a good testing ground for the action can be successfully taken to an even more absurd level. Judging by how many times the first trailer has been viewed online, people are intrigued by what director and action movie veteran David Leitch is delivering.

I wont go so far as to say that the Fast and the Furious movies should become as outlandish as the MCU, DCEU or Monster-Verse, but this franchise has a good thing going for it right now by tossing out the heightened realism rulebook. If Universal plays its cards right and keeps trying new ways to up the ante action-wise, perhaps the Fast and the Furious lore could live on for another decade, if not longer.

Hobbs and Shaw races into theaters on August 2, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage on that project and other updates concerning the entire Fast and the Furious franchise. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release schedule to learn what else is hitting the big screen later this year.

Matt Reeves Says The Batman Solo Movie Is Going Well

Matt Reeves Says The Batman Solo Movie Is Going Well

Few solo DCEU films have generated the same level of excitement as the upcoming Batman movie. War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves continues to work on the arduous process of cracking the story, and it seems that things are moving along nicely behind the scenes. In fact, when asked for a project status update by a fan online, Reeves took to social media to share his progress. Addressing how work on the film is going at the moment, Reeves wrote:

Really, really well, thanks! I could not be more excited!

So, if you were worried about the status of the standalone Batman movie, then it looks like there isn't anything to fret over right now. Matt Reeves has asserted that everything is going "really well" behind the scenes, and he is apparently very excited to bring this story to life on the big screen. He obviously offers up nothing concerning concrete plot details or a general direction as to where he wants to take this film (though there's no shortage of story options), but this at least tells us that progress is being made.

This reassurance is essential, as the solo Batman movie has hit its own fair share of speed bumps through its development over the course of the last few years. The most prominent hurdle came when Ben Affleck stepped down as the director of the project, resulting in the eventual search to find Matt Reeves and lock him in place. Now the project appears to have found its footing (though rumors of a possible Batman recasting continue to surface), and Reeves is taking his time to make sure that he gets it right.

With that last point in mind, while Matt Reeves' Twitter post helps offer up a renewed sense of confidence in the status of the project, it is worth remembering that we still might not see the film for a few years. Recent rumors related to the solo Batman movie have suggested that it could begin filming sometime in 2019, with a projected release date aiming for 2020 or 2021. Moreover, Reeves recently signed a development deal with Netflix that will likely see him split his time between the streaming service and his current commitments in the DC Extended Universe. Matt Reeves is making progress, but there's still plenty of work that needs to be done before Bruce Wayne will take center stage for another solo movie.

Stay tuned for more updates related to Matt Reeves' solo Batman movie as new information becomes available to us. For now, you can also set your sights on the seven seas and start gearing up for James Wan's Aquaman, which will join the DCEU later this year on December 21.

The Story Behind Endgame And Natalie Portman

The Story Behind Endgame And Natalie Portman

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame!

Avengers: Endgame truly lived up to its billing as the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to this point, providing plenty of callbacks and many surprising cameos. Perhaps most surprising among those cameos was Natalie Portman as Dr. Jane Foster, who hasnt been seen in the MCU since 2013s Thor: The Dark World. However, this cameo was not all it appeared to be, as directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained:

Anthony: All she did new for this movie was-Joe: The voice.Anthony: A little bit of voice-over when shes talking in the distance, thats it.

Although we see Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in Avengers: Endgame, she didnt actually show up to play the character again. Her appearance in the film was just old footage left over from Thor: The Dark World that was repurposed for the movie; the actress didnt film any new scenes. She did, however, provide some voiceover for Avengers: Endgame, as the Russos told Entertainment Weekly.

In the film, there are shots of Jane Foster in the distance with some Asgardians, and Natalie Portman recorded voiceover of her character thanking them for taking care of her. Its not easy to even hear what shes saying, but it adds some background to the scene, showing that this is all happening in a living, breathing place. Its also nice to know that its actually Natalie Portmans voice were hearing.

Natalie Portman had indicated in the past that she believed she was done with the MCU; she didn't appear in Thor: Ragnarok and given reports that she was not happy with the situation that led to Patty Jenkins leaving as director of Thor: The Dark World, it seemed unlikely shed ever be in a Marvel movie again.

So when Natalie Portman showed up to the premiere of Avengers: Endgame, fans wondered whether or not the actress had returned to the fold and if the long absent Jane Foster would be in the movie. It turns out she did and she was, just not in any major way.

In Avengers: Endgame, the shot where Jane gets up from her bed and Rocket Raccoon goes after her to extract the Aether off-screen was framed rather oddly. And since we didnt see her and Rocket or her and Thor together, I think many of us assumed that Natalie Portman didnt really film any new scenes and her appearance was either old footage or digital wizardry.

It would have been nice for her to actually see Thor again to close out that story, especially given that she survived the snap and how he was weeping over her in the Time Heist prep meeting. But its better than nothing, and Thor didnt want to be there and probably didnt want Jane to see him in his dilapidated state.

Thor did, however, see his mother Frigga in one of the films more emotional moments. She died before the Decimation and he was never getting her back, so their reunion and the God of Thunder getting the wisdom from his mother he so desperately needed arguably had more meaning than a reunion with Jane.

Still, it was nice to see Natalie Portmans Jane Foster back in the MCU if only to remind us of how she played a big part in Thors early entry into the human realm. Its also cool that the relationship between Natalie Portman and Marvel has thawed enough that she recorded the voiceover and showed up to the premiere. I wouldnt expect this means that Jane Foster's Thor is coming in Phase 4, but you never know.

Avengers: Endgame is now playing. If you havent seen it, why did you read this article? And if youre going to see it again, and why wouldnt you, make sure you know what ticket to buy. Also, check out our 2019 Release Schedule to learn about all the other big movies coming this summer.
