In its brief time in theaters Black Panther has proven to be far more than just another comic book movie or tentpole event film. Ryan Coogler's flick has surpassed such distinctions, dominating the box office and the discussion to become a cultural event. Part of the moment surrounding Black Panther has seen celebrities and charitable people helping kids and those who can't afford it get a chance to be a part of something and see a black superhero on the big screen. The latest person to show his generosity is none other than Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman. The actor, who plays T'Challa in the film, bought out a showing of Black Panther for a group of underprivileged youth.
Chadwick Boseman, a native of Anderson, South Carolina, bought out a showing of Black Panther at the Amstar Stadium 14 theater in his hometown. According to USA Today, 312 underprivileged youths were invited to the showing on Saturday courtesy of the actor. The theater saw a ton of business on opening night too, as 460 of Chadwick Boseman's family and friends filled up two screenings of the film.
What's awesome about this, beyond just the obvious generosity, is that these kids got to see the film and be a part of something on opening weekend. All of the showings at the Amstar Stadium 14 and the Regal Starlight in Anderson were near-capacity and these kids, who probably don't get to go to the movies that often, got to be there on opening weekend with a guaranteed seat courtesy of the Wakandan king. So, when these kids go to school, they can be a part of the conversation in the halls and on the playground and not have to feel left out as their friends are talking about this movie. It's also especially cool that the actor did this in his home state. This not only allows these kids to see black representation on screen, but also in real life, as someone from their community became successful enough to return to his hometown and share in that success.
Chadwick Boseman is just the latest in seemingly a long line of people doing what they can to get people out to see the movie. Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson helped those less fortunate connect with generous strangers online to buy tickets to see what she feels is an important film. A man in Harlem raised money to send a Boys and Girls Club to see the film and The Shape of Water actress Octavia Spencer also bought out screenings in a Mississippi theater so kids got a chance to see someone who looks like them as a superhero in a blockbuster film.
