Why Mark Hamill Got To Play With A Giant BB-8 In The Making Of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a movie packed with tons of surprises, but one that nobody really saw coming is that Mark Hamill actually plays two different roles. In addition to playing the legendary Luke Skywalker, he is also credited as Dobbu Scay -- the strange little alien that keeps pumping coins into BB-8 on Canto Bight. This little detail was revealed shortly after the film's release, but what you probably didn't know is that filming the scene involved Hamill playing around on set with a giant version of the beloved ball droid. He recently told me,

I just said, 'I'd love to do a motion capture role of some sort.' And so one Saturday afternoon down I went... now people said, 'Oh, it was voiced by Mark Hamill.' No! I was in a motion capture suit, and they had a BB-8 that was proportionally right for how small the character was. It was big! So I had a blast. I really loved doing that.

The production team behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi apparently went all out for Mark Hamill's first experience in the world of performance capture, going as far as to build a giant, scale BB-8 that would fully allow Hamill to embody Dobbu Scay. I was impressed to learn this when I recently sat down with the actor for a one-on-one interview in Dublin, Ireland, where Hamill was named Guest of Honour for the city's St. Patrick's Day festival. I had asked the actor about playing other roles in the Star Wars universe, and he gifted me the funny tale of playing what is actually his third character in the franchise (he previously voiced Darth Bane on the animated Star Wars: The Clone Saga series)

It should recognized that Mark Hamill's part as Dobbu Scay wasn't exactly hidden, as he is actually given a credit at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That being said, it was a credit that he himself really never expected to get, and was surprisingly well-prepared to avoid. The whole thing was initially designed to be a funny, buried gag that would allow Hamill some motion capture experience, so he was as surprised as anyone to see the little alien's name next to his own at the end of the film. He added,

I was very surprised that Rian [Johnson] billed me as Dobbu Scay... I thought it was going to be an Easter egg. I didn't say, 'Oh, I need billing.' And if I did have billing, in the past as a pseudonym I've used a combination of my brothers' names, and I call myself Patrick Williams.

Naturally, I now plan on looking for the name Patrick Williams in all of Mark Hamill's past work.

How Much Godzilla: King of the Monsters Could Make In Its Opening Weekend

The summer movie season is basically here. With Avengers: Endgame arriving in just a couple weeks the box office will begin to heat up as the studios all bring out major tentpole releases during this competitive season. One movie looking to make a huge impact when it arrives in a little over a month is Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and early tracking has the film looking at an opening weekend between $40 and $60 million.

While that's a perfectly respectable number for most summer movies, many are wondering if it might be a little low. 2014's Godzilla saw a domestic opening weekend of over $90 million, and so a drop to less than half that for the sequel would be a huge hit. However, it's possible that the movie to look at isn't the previous Godzilla but actually Kong: Skull Island. That film, from which King of the Monsters also follows, came out more recently and managed a $60 million opening, which could indicate people are becoming less interested in giant monster movies.

Part of the issue, of course, is competition. Godzilla had basically none. The biggest movie to open against it was Disney's Million Dollar Arm, which barely grossed $10 million in its opening weekend. The comedy hit Neighbors was number two at the box office that weekend in its second week. The only big tentpole release in competition was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was in its third week, and had underperformed from the beginning.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters biggest opening weekend competition is the Elton John biopic Rocketman, which isn't expected to set the world on fire, but is looking at a $25 million opening weekend, far better than what the previous Godzilla's opening weekend competition was able to muster.

In addition, there will likely be significant hold over business from the Memorial Day Weekend releases from the week before, including Disney's live-action Aladdin.

BoxOfficePro simply suggests that the Godzilla/Kong franchise is losing steam. If that's the case, it's not great news for Godzilla Vs. Kong. The movie recently wrapped its Australian production with an eye toward a release next year. Getting it in front of the cameras so soon after Godzilla: King of the Monsters was clearly an attempt to strike while the iron was still hot, but it may have cooled too much already.

Of course, these numbers are still incredibly early and subject to change. As we get closer to release many who might be lukewarm on the film may realize they're actually much more interested in it. At this point, it's probably tough to judge the public's feelings toward any movie that isn't called Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps, by the time we get to the end of May Godzilla will be a true king once again and bring in a massive opening weekend.,

The Supergirl Movie Could Be A Period Piece

Although Henry Cavill's future as Superman remains in question, it doesn't look like the DC Extended Universe is shutting the door on exploring Kryptonian mythology entirely. Last month, it was reported that Warner Bros has a Supergirl movie in development, with Oren Uziel penning the script. While Cavill's departure from the DCEU hasn't been officially confirmed (and the actor's Instagram video raises more questions than answers), supposedly there are now plans to shift focus onto moving Supergirl forward rather than the long-discussed Man of Steel 2. Now there's also word that rather than take place in the present, the Girl of Steel's movie would be set decades in the past.

In its report about Warner Bros stating that no decision has been made yet regarding Henry Cavill making more Superman appearances, The Playlist mentioned that currently the Supergirl movie is being envisioned as following the eponymous heroine as a teenager in the 1970s. This is subject to change, but if the '70s angle is cemented, that would mean Cavill would definitely not be appearing, as his Kal-El/Clark Kent wasn't born until 1980. So just like how the 1984 Supergirl movie was only loosely connected to the preceding Christopher Reeve-led Superman movies, the DCEU's Supergirl movie would also be a standalone piece, and this time, Kara's cousin isn't even around for people to talk about.

Kara Zor-El being older than Kal-El is nothing new, as in the comics, Kara was already a teenager when Krypton exploded, while Kal was a newborn. However, through unusual circumstances (it all depends on which story you read/watch), by the time Kara landed on Earth, Kal was already an adult and become Superman. So it's an interesting movie for the Supergirl movie to follow along with Kara at a time when her cousin isn't even alive. That being said, what isn't clear is where Supergirl would be set? Is it following Kara while she's still on Krypton, or is the movie giving a Superman-less version of Kara's origin story on Earth? The latter would deviate from the source material significantly, but then again, we did see in Man of Steel that one of Kryptonian pods in the Fortress of Solitude, so at least there's some groundwork already laid for Kara to have awoken on our world decades before people would hear the name Superman.

Period piece superhero movies have become more common in recent years. In the DCEU, Wonder Woman showed Diana of Themyscira visiting the outside world for the first time in World War I, and Wonder Woman 1984 will revisit the heroine in, well, you can guess the year. Setting Supergirl in the 1970s would be an interesting way to flesh out the DCEU's pre-Man of Steel years further, and it would be an even bolder move to show Kara becoming a superhero without any Superman influence in her life. Nevertheless, this project is its the early stages, so perhaps circumstances will change and Supergirl will be changed into a contemporary tale.

Back in 2016, Hollywood announced to the world that phone apps were now fair game for feature film adaptation with The Angry Birds Movie. The animated kids film didn't land with critics, but as an inoffensive kids film with name recognition, it performed well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, and thus a franchise. Angry Birds 2 isn't scheduled to hit theaters until next year, but it is already adding to the fun voice cast from the first film. Joining the returning cast of Jason Sudeikis, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Bill Hader are Sterling K. Brown, Leslie Jones, Lil Rel Howery, Awkwafina, Dove Cameron, Rachel Bloom, Eugenio Derbez, Beck Bennett and Brooklynn Prince.

Primarily a TV actor for years, Sterling K. Brown's breakout roles in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson and This Is Us have seen his stock rise as he finds himself an increasing big screen presence. He will be in the bonkers-looking action flick Hotel Artemis this summer, as well as the continuation of the the Predator franchise, The Predator, later this year. While we don't yet know his role (although I assume it will be a bird, or a pig, one of the two), Sterling K. Brown seems well suited to voiceover work in a kids movie like this. He has a recognizable and soothing voice, and I could totally see him playing a wise bird giving sage advice, or a father figure-type character like on This Is Us.

Of all the new people added to this cast, Leslie Jones seems the best suited to the animation realm. Her boisterous and animated personality should bring a lot of fun and humor to Angry Birds 2. The actress has already had some fun in this realm when she voiced a character in 2016's Sing, a movie that new Angry Bird Beck Bennett also starred in. The voice cast is crucial to bringing the humor and excitement to a movie like this, and listening to Leslie Jones play off Jason Sudeikis' straight man Red should be fun.

Next up is Lil Rel Howery, the comedian and actor who burst onto the scene in Jordan Peele's Get Out. A lot of the humor Lil Rel Howery brought in that movie was just via the phone conversations he was having with Daniel Kaluuya's Chris, so the actor can clearly provide laughs just with his delivery.

Rachel Bloom is no stranger to voice work either, having worked on series like Bojack Horseman and Robot Chicken. Her lead role on the musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has also shown her versatility so perhaps her casting indicates that Angry Birds 2 will be bringing in a musical element.

This new voice cast, announced by producer John Cohen on Twitter, clearly shows that the sequel film is aiming for an even more diverse array of voices for the animated characters. There's definitely a focus on up-and-coming talent, too. Awkwafina will be in Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians this year, and Dove Cameron is currently on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Mexicana actor Eugenio Derbez will bring some latin flavor to the proceedings, and casting The Florida Project's Brooklynn Prince means we'll probably be getting some younger characters in the movie.

Looking back at the first film, Angry Birds 2 may not be for everyone and it will certainly be geared towards a younger audience. It will all depend on the script and direction, but Angry Birds 2 will have no shortage of talent. Angry Birds 2 is scheduled to fly into theaters on September 20th, 2019.
