5 Stephen King Easter Eggs Hidden In Pet Sematary

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Pet Sematary. If you havent seen the film yet, read on at your own risk.

Stephen King adaptations have been popular in Hollywood for decades, but there have been few times in the last 50 years when his name has carried as much heat as it does right now. Andres Muschiettis IT really helped kickstart the wave in the fall of 2017, and in the time since weve seen some impressive stuff come out including movies like Geralds Game and 1922, and television shows like Castle Rock. The most recent title to contribute to the trend is Kevin Klsch and Dennis Widmyers Pet Sematary but more than just adapting one of Kings most iconic books, the new film also pays tribute to the authors incredible legacy.

How so? In addition to featuring specific callbacks to the novel on which its based, Pet Sematary is also littered with Easter eggs big and small that will put a smile on the face of any Stephen King fan. As proof, weve highlighted five of them below, and well start with one that is featured toward the very beginning of the movie

Lewis Is Tired Of Working Late HoursWhen the Creed family moves to Ludlow, Maine, its seen by Lewis (Jason Clarke) and Rachel (Amy Seimetz) as an opportunity for a fresh start. After all, the former has a great new job at the local university, working normal hours at campus infirmary instead of at a big, busy hospital. Lewis even makes a specific point about how happy he is that hes no longer working the Graveyard Shift and while in context he means assigned work in the small hours of the morning, its a bit of dialogue in the film that also happens to be a callback to one of Stephen Kings early short stories.

First published in Cavalier magazine in 1970 before being collected in the 1978 short story collection Night Shift, Graveyard Shift is a quick horror tale about a group of middle class workers hired for a cleanup job in a decrepit textile mill. It's pretty horrible work, as there is a heavy infestation of rats that plague the job, but the tiny rodents turn out to be the least of the teams worries. This is because the creatures have actually managed to evolve while trapped in the building, turning into huge, monstrous, mutated creatures. Obviously we dont see any of that featured in Pet Sematary, but the nod is clearly there.

The Rabid St. Bernard StoryTypically you wouldnt think that a story about a violent, rabid dog would be appropriate fodder for a childs birthday party, and yet its that kind of tale that Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) chooses to share off-screen with an unidentified party guest during Ellies big day. Its conversation basically included as background noise, and youll only catch it if youre really listening to it. But those who do will easily catch the reference that is being tossed out, as its clear that the canine in question here is none other than the notorious Cujo, and an allusion to Stephen Kings hit 1981 novel.

In the book, Cujo is a St. Bernard who has the unfortunate fate of being bitten on the nose by a rabid bat while running around chasing rabbits, causing him to contract the disease and go feral. This turns out to be extremely bad for every person that encounters him, including a mother and son who he winds up trapping in a car on a viciously hot day. The story was previously adapted as a film in 1983, so it already has its own cinematic legacy, but now Pet Sematary has done its part to extended it.

A Familiar Pair In Rachels Parents HouseThanks to her history with her sister, Rachel doesnt feel a great deal of comfort when she goes home to stay with her parents for a spell following the death of her daughter. Its a place of genuine nightmares for her, as she is haunted by memories of her sick, cruel sibling and the nature of her horrific death. Those memories alone make the whole place feel sickeningly inhospitable, but definitely not helping matters is the fact that there is also what appears to be a painting of the Grady Sisters from The Shining hanging on the wall.

Its a blink-and-youll-miss-it Easter egg, but if you know to look for it you can easily spot the famous blue dresses in a portrait that Rachel steps past while walking through her parents house at night. Surely included because their sisterly relationship mirrors that of Rachel and Zeldas, the Gradys are the daughters of the former caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Delbert Grady, and were murdered by their father when he was driven to madness. Its not the only reference to The Shining in Pet Sematary (well get there in a minute), but its definitely the best hidden one.

An Ominous SignThere are many classic author trademarks found in the works of Stephen King, but one of the most blatant is his frequent use of his home state as a setting. King clearly loves Maine, and as a result a significant number of his stories take place within its borders. There are some locations he uses more frequently than others, such as Castle Rock, Jerusalems Lot, and even Ludlow, but arguably the most sinister of them all is the township of Derry which gets a very brief shout out late in Pet Sematary via a highway road sign.

Those who recognize the name of the town probably felt a chill when the sign appears, as Derry is best known as the setting of IT, and is basically the town equivalent of a haunted house festering with an evil that lives below the surface. Truly, though, this is an Easter egg that actually applies not just to the story of Pennywise The Dancing Clown, but to many of Stephen Kings works, as the municipality has also been featured in books including 1994s Insomnia, 2001s Dreamcatcher, and 2011s 11/22/63.

Ellie Smashes The Bathroom DoorRemember how I said I would get back to The Shining? Well, here we are. This bit comes from the third act of Pet Sematary after Dead Ellie (Jet Laurence) decides that she doesnt want her mother to be alive anymore. The vicious nine year old starts attacking Rachel, and its shown that a bathroom door isnt much of a defense against her. Its a high tension moment, but its also easy to see the similarity between it and the part in The Shining when Wendy Torrance is trying to protect herself from her psychotic husband, Jack.

While Stephen King might not be a fan of the movie, Stanley Kubricks adaptation of The Shining made this particular moment from the book iconic, and it was hard not to watch the ending of Pet Sematary and immediately conjure it to mind. Its possible that there just arent that many ways to feature a character trying to break through a bathroom door, but were betting on the reference being intentional.

These are just the Stephen King nods that I caught in our first viewing of Pet Sematary and we are sure that there are more that we missed. Did you catch any of them and want to make them known? Hit the comments section below with your findings!

Why Evil Deads Bruce Campbell Feels Bad For Superhero Actors

Why Evil Deads Bruce Campbell Feels Bad For Superhero Actors

With the recent unfortunate cancellation of the eccentric horror show Ash vs. Evil Dead by Starz after its three season run, it begs the question: what role we will see the hilarious and talented Bruce Campbell take on next? Since the horror icon slashed the possibility for Ash to return and announced his retirement from the character, some fans might be experiencing some Campbell withdrawals. However, there is one genre you can rule out for the humorous actor, superhero films. He has recently his expressed his deep sympathy for actors who sign on to play these high-profile roles, referring to the ridiculous contracts that come with suiting up. Here's what he said:

Big blockbuster movies, whenever I see an actor get cast in one of those, I wince, because I go, 'Oh, that poor son of a bitch is going to be in that suit for 10 years.' If shooting schedule's seven months of shooting, you get your one month in the Bahamas, and then you're promoting for three months, then you go right back to the next sequel, back in that same fucking suit.

Yikes, it looks like the long list of superhero actors, counting Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, can now consider themselves roasted by Bruce Campbell. The actor's words to ComicBook.com aren't wrong though. While being a superhero certainly has its perks, like fame, fortune, your own action figure, etc, it also can take quite the toll on an actor. After long shoots, and oftentimes reshoots, the casts travel to destinations around the world for months on end, answering the same questions like "So how did you get in shape for this role?" The process repeats the more films the actor does, so Robert Downey Jr. is going on eight for his Iron Man appearances.

Way back when, Bruce Campbell was a small part of the original Spider-Man trilogy, playing a different role in each of the films, adding a bit of comedic relief opposite Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker. Campbell admits though that his only draw to the franchise was Sam Raimi, who has been a frequent contributor to the horror genre, including directing the first three Evil Dead movies and serving as executive producer to Ash vs. Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell also further explained his distaste for the superhero genre by bringing up the technical acting involved. While Campbell had experience with both practical and CGI effects on Ash vs. Evil Dead, CGI effects were particularly a bother to him, bringing to attention the way these actors must act with nothing... or to a tennis ball. Additionally, Campbell expressed his opinion that superheroes onscreen just aren't flawed enough.

So it's safe to say Bruce Campbell won't be getting into comic book adaptations. But at least we'll always have his Spider-Man cameos, right? Regardless, stay tuned to CinemaBlend for the latest news regarding superhero movies.

Bruce Campbell talks about superhero movies, and how he feels bad for actors having to commit to multi-picture deals when signing up to play one on the big screen. There's no denying that superhero movies and franchises are the bread and butter of Hollywood at the moment.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Wonder Park Ticket

The days are getting longer, the weather is getting nicer, and it's almost time for that age-old tradition of strapping oneself inside a metal roller coaster and defying gravity for fun! However, you might not have a local theme park open for the season, depending on where you hail from, so a movie like Wonder Park could be the thrill ride fix you need, mixed in with a family drama about the power of imagination. But, of course, there's something else we have to wonder about with this particular film. Yes, it's time to ask that beautiful question, To 3D, or Not To 3D?

If you're wondering what we thought about Wonder Park as a movie, head over to our official review for the full scoop. But if you're wondering whether the film is worth the extra ticket money, or if you'd be better off throwing that money towards a box of popcorn at your local theme park, you've come to the right place. Glasses on, as we're about to ride the 3D attraction that is Wonder Park.

Wonder Park, at its heart, is a film about a young girl's imagination, and the theme park it inspires. So that alone would be a pretty big treat in 3D, especially during the theme park sequences in the film. But Wonder Park isn't content with just showing off impressive attractions with 3D panache, as it takes both the real and imaginary worlds of its protagonist and does a pretty bang up job of finding something to surprise the eye with in both.

Looking at the finished product of Wonder Park's 3D conversion, it's a clear verdict in how much time and effort was put into the execution of this enhanced version of the film. The overall package is crisp and eye pleasing, with none of the defects that crop up in some lesser 3D presentations. While there's still some holding back with the film's visuals, it's not to the extent that the film suffers from it.

There are a couple of key shots in Wonder Park that show the perfect example of a self-imposed limitation when it comes to the 3D presentation. Those shots have objects like ice cream cones and other debris from the various adventures the film engages in hitting an invisible camera lens / glass wall and bouncing back into the picture. While those little touches are kinda fun, and definitely play with the visual fourth wall, they cause the film to stop short of any sort of thrills involving the objects in play flying out towards the audience.

While objects may not fly out of the screen, and into the audience's laps, Wonder Park does happen to boast some of the best depth in a 3D animated film. And that's besides the standard shots flying through roller coaster loops and the far off vistas of Wonderland being shown in fantastic depth and clarity. This film goes the extra mile, and includes impressive panning shots of crowds occupying the park that are so well drawn, you can feel each individual guest standing in front of you. It actually feels like a crowd shot, and not just a background effect, which is the ultimate cherry on top of this visual sundae.

There are a lot of beautiful colors and night shots at work in Wonder Park, which are both the types of aspects that get lost in a film with sub-par brightness. Now your mileage may vary when it comes to the brightness of your Wonder Park showing, as theaters maintain their projection rigs to varying degrees. That fact alone throws in a variable that can't always be accounted for. But in this screening of Wonder Park, there was only a slight dimming between putting the 3D glasses on and taking them off at various points in the film. The colors still look beautiful, and the night shots aren't a pain to look at.

Speaking of taking your glasses off, if you're tempted to remove your glasses during any point of Wonder Park, you'll see that classic blur that is a significant part of any good 3D film's visual language. The level of blur you experience in a movie such as this usually indicates how well the 3D effects are being manipulated in service of the thrills portrayed on screen. In the case of Wonder Park, there is a beautiful spectrum of blurred vision, from the extremely blurred backgrounds to the subtle blur of close up shots with characters and objects they're interacting with.

As with any good theme park, there's a lot of fast motion, with spirals, dips, and whipping around in the visuals of Wonder Park. But don't get intimidated by that, as it all flows smoothly, and with great precision. Rather than confuse your eyes, or your stomach, the 3D thrills in this film will not rattle either into a sense of discomfort. So if you decide to take this ride, you won't have to keep a waste bag or eye drops handy, as you'll be able to enjoy Wonder Park with no discomfort whatsoever.

Wonder Park is a stunning film to look at, with the 3D aspect making things only that much more interesting. If you're going to see this movie, you're getting the best return on your hard earned ticket money by seeing it with the added bells and whistles. There's extra wonder in Wonder Park's 3D conversion, and you owe it to yourself to experience every bit of it.

How Smoking Weed Helped Save Kevin Smiths Life During Heart Attack

How Smoking Weed Helped Save Kevin Smiths Life During Heart Attack

Earlier this year, director, writer, podcaster and professional nerd Kevin Smith suffered a massive heart attack after filming a standup special in Southern California. In the wake of such a frightening event at such a relatively young age, the filmmaker best known for lowbrow raunchy comedies was incredibly reflective and poignant, while also committing to make some life changes after this wakeup call. And while he may be dieting and exercising more, he probably won't be cutting out smoking weed. As it turns out, the miracle plant may have saved his life. Kevin Smith explained what happened when he talked to the doctor during the heart attack, saying:

I said, 'Doc, honestly, I just smoked too much weed this morning. That's what this is. I honestly thought I was too high. I'd smoked a bunch of weed that day because I was doing the show and then I smoked a joint right before the show and then I got off stage and all of the sudden I had a heart attack. He goes, 'No, quite the opposite. That weed saved your life.' And I was like, 'Do tell! Like, what do you mean?' He said, 'You kept calm. They told you [that] you were having a massive heart attack, and you remained calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life.'

Well if that's not the most poetic and thematically appropriate statement given Kevin Smith's career, I don't know what is. The director, who is known for stoner comedies and whose most famous character is Silent Bob, a pothead who has his own superhero alter ego named Bluntman, was just saved from certain death by the ganja. Snoochie boochies indeed. As Kevin Smith told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, he actually suspected that the weed was the cause of why he wasn't feeling well, when in fact it kept him calm during a time that a person might understandably freak out and thus make the situation worse. This had to give Kevin Smith a chuckle in such a harrowing situation. He has never been shy about smoking weed, and now he has even more reason to extol its virtues.

Kevin Smith's filmography has often featured stoner characters and instances where pot plays a part, especially in his ViewAskewniverse films where he and lifelong friend Jason Mewes play Jay and Silent Bob, two stoners, drug dealers and occasional heroes. In Mallrats, Jay smokes up a couple of game show contestants to incapacitate them so Jeremy London and Jason Lee's characters can sub in. Kevin Smith even wrote and directed a comedy pilot called Hollyweed. Kevin Smith has gotten away from the stoner type comedies that have made him famous of late, instead focusing on weird, horror-esque films that haven't always been received that well. He has already talked about returning to his former properties with a continuation of Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, so perhaps he now has even more inspiration to do so.

Kevin Smith can take comfort knowing that unlike the food he was eating, weed wasn't killing him. Now he just has to remember when he has the munchies, he should opt for salads, almonds and yogurt instead of greasy, fatty and sugary foods. He seems to be doing much better now too, as he has lost weight and was recently visiting Disneyland with his family. Here's hoping he can continue this progress and keep making his unique brand of films, even if the more recent ones are harder to enjoy sober. Kevin Smith's stand-up special, the one which he filmed right before suffering his heart attack, Silent But Deadly, premieres on Showtime on May 11 at 9 p.m.
