Jake Gyllenhaal Just Shared The Best Response To His Spider-Man: Far From Home Casting

Next year, Jake Gyllenhaal is entering the superhero movie realm through Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he's bringing Mysterio to life. We haven't heard much about Gyllenhaal's upcoming turn as the illusion-casting villain, but the actor just posted a video capturing his shock upon learning he wasn't hired to play Spider-Man.

For his first Instagram post ever, this is a actually a solid debut for Jake Gyllenhaal on the social media platform. To borrow from Saturday Night Live character Stefon, this video has everything: a colorful comic book cover, a surprised reaction, being cut off right before saying a curse word. Obviously this is all in jest, but it would be great if there was indeed footage of Gyllenhaal on the Spider-Man: Far From Home set performing the Web-Slinger and oblivious to the fact that Tom Holland is standing nearly in a webbed costume.

Actually, this is the first time that Jake Gyllenhaal has confirmed, albeit indirectly, that he's participating in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Mysterio. Gyllenhaal was first reported to have been up for the role back in May, but publicly, neither the actor nor Marvel made any comment. With seven months to go until Far From Home's release, perhaps Gyllenhaal's fun video indicates something is coming pertaining to the sequel soon. Maybe a first trailer? At the bare minimum, it would be nice to see what Gyllenhaal's Mysterio costume looks like.

Introduced in 1964's The Amazing Spider-Man #13, Quentin Beck, the original Mysterio, was a special effects expert and stuntman who worked on major motion pictures, but after realizing that his job wasn't going to take him any further career-wise, he used his talents for a life of crime. His devices, illusions and skills in hypnotism have cemented him as one of Spider-Man's most troublesome foes, and while there have been others who've used the Mysterio moniker, Beck has the most impactful legacy of the bunch.

No official plot details for Spider-Man: Far From Home have been revealed yet, but the story will see Peter Parker traveling to Europe with his friends during summer vacation. Along with Jake Gyllenhaal, the sequel's new faces include Numan Acar as Dmitri, J.B. Smoove, Oli Hill and Remy Hii. As for returning characters, they include Michael Keaton as Vulture, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Zendaya as Michelle Jones, Jacob Battalion as Ned, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5, 2019, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress. Don't forget to also look through our Marvel movies guide to see what the MCU has in development.
