Watch Donald Glover Bring Lando To Saturday Night Live
We're just a few short weeks away from the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but you'd be forgiven for wishing it was called Lando instead. Much of that has to do with the fact that Lando is portrayed by Donald Glover, an incredibly talented guy who can act, write, and sing. Well, he can now add host SNL to that list because Glover hosted a pretty entertaining episode of the long-running sketch show last night. Among the memorable sketches, Glover gave a taste of his take on Lando ahead of the spin-offs debut and you can check that out below.
Donald Glover may not have made it past the audition (twice!) but he returned Saturday Night Live as the host and musical guest. As should come as no surprise to most, Glover took to his job easily, leading several funny sketches and helping to elevate a few that needed an extra boost. While SNL had plenty of movie-themed sketches last night (including A Quiet Place), perhaps the most buzzworthy belonged to Glover showing off his Lando Calrissian in a Star Wars themed sketch that tried to answer one important question: Where are all the black humans in the galaxy?
In the sketch, Glover's Lando has founded a conference on Naboo to assemble all the black humans in the galaxy. He anticipated thousands of people showing up but it turns out that there's only about four total. As Lando says, there's a bunch of lizards in vests but not that many black people. The lack of representation in Star Wars has long been a major and justifiable critique of the series and SNL poked some serious fun at that. Lando kicked the conference off by introducing Saw Gerrera (Kenan Thompson), who fans may remember from fellow Star Wars spin-off Rogue One. Saw tried to honor all the black humans who had come before him but was only able to name Mace Windu.
Leslie Jones' character then took the stage and after a way too forward kiss on the hand from Lando, she announced that due to low attendance, all the events except meals have been canceled ("Even the thousand man march?" "What do you think, dude?!"). The sketch ended with Lando revealing that before he made his money playing cards or whatever else he does, he wanted to be a singer and becomes to croon "Making Love in Space," with Max Rebo on the keys. It's honestly a pretty weak ending to the sketch, but that's SNL for you.
