Fantastic Beasts 3: Warner Bros. Reportedly Worried About Johnny Depp Backlash

Warner Bros. is currently preparing for Fantastic Beasts 3, the third of five planned movies in Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's series. Johnny Depp has a lead role as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. But now executives are reportedly worried about backlash as the legal battle between Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard rages on.

You may recall Johnny Depp's $50 million defamation suit against Amber Heard, alleging her abuse allegations against him were part of an elaborate hoax to advance her career; he also claimed her op-ed cost him his job with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Amber Heard just responded to Johnny Depp's lawsuit by detailing some graphic allegations against him, via The Post, claiming he became "the Monster" when drunk or medicated, and kicked and choked her, and then often wouldn't remember his violent behavior. She shared text messages said to be from him and his assistant acknowledging and apologizing for Depp's alleged behavior.

Johnny Depps lawyer, Adam Waldman, claimed again that Amber Heard's allegations were a hoax, and said they were currently interviewing other women who had come forward claiming they were victims of violence and other abuse by Heard.

But the continued play of abuse allegations in headlines has reportedly concerned some Warner Bros. execs, at least according to sources who spoke to The Post.

Executives at Warner Bros. are wondering how to deal with the backlash of the Depp matter on the Harry Potter franchise. High-level female execs at the studio are extremely worried about working with Depp and the message it sends to the public, especially after the recent sordid departure of CEO Kevin Tsujihara. [...] This is yet another blow to the morale of female employees at the studio. If Warner Bros. continues to stick by Depp, it would reveal a lot about the values the company holds.

CEO Kevin Tsujihara recently exited Warner Bros. after a sexual misconduct casting couch scandal.

J.K. Rowling backed Johnny Depp when concerns were previously voiced about including him in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. She wrote on her website in December 2017 that Harry Potter fans had "legitimate concerns" but "[b]ased on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies."

Now, this source claims not everyone is happy that J.K. Rowling made such a public statement:

Many at Warner Bros. wish that Rowling hadnt come out so strongly behind Depp, because having made her opinion so public boxes them into a corner.

Warner Bros. reps didn't respond to The Post's requests for comment, so all we have to go on is the word of these unnamed sources -- who do seem to be in Amber Heard's corner -- plus Johnny Depp's attorney -- who is clearly in Depp's corner.

Whatever the truth of this short-lived but apparently never-ending marriage, it's still not over yet. Johnny Depp's lawyer has issued subpoenas to Amber Heard, "her hoax assisting friends, Elon Musk and other witnesses" to explain the evidence they plan to show on their end.

Fantastic Beasts 3 was meant to start filming this summer, but production was delayed to fall 2019 to give the film more prep time. According to Dan Fogler (Jacob) the third movie is going to be "gigantic" and "bigger than the first two combined," including travel to Brazil.

The last we heard about Fantastic Beasts 3 was last month from the now ousted Kevin Tsujihara, who acknowledged that the second film -- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald -- didnt perform as well as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, "but I think we know what we need to do to get the third film hopefully even better than the first one. And J.K. Rowling is really working hard now on that third script, and were going to get it right."

How Much Money Us Is Expected To Make During Its Opening Weekend

It looks like the shapeshifters will hand the baton off to the doppelgngers at the box office this weekend, as the MCUs smash hit Captain Marvel makes way for Jordan Peeles horror film, Us. Jordan Peeles debut film Get Out wound up becoming wildly profitable, earning over $250 million on a $4.5 million budget. And although it is far too early to tell if Us will enjoy similar success, it does look like it will get off to a strong start opening weekend.

The horror movie from Universal and Jordan Peeles Monkeypaw productions is tracking to open in a wide range from $38 million to $48 million according to The Hollywood Reporter. There is even a belief among some box office analysts that Us could reach or crack the $50 million mark this weekend.

Based on this tracking, things are looking good that Us will come in first at the box office, beating out Captain Marvel in its third weekend in release. Even at the low end, a $38 million opening bow would improve on Get Outs $33.4 million domestic debut in 2017. Us cost more than Get Out though at $20 million, but it still looks poised for box office success.

These predictions are up from the earlier tracking that had the film landing between $35 million and $40 million. Those numbers came in before the Us' buzzy premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival and before the positive reviews started coming out. Now it's the week of the release and the buzz has increased and the opening weekend box office tracking seems to reflect that.

Other than Captain Marvel, which has been in theaters for a couple of weeks now, Us will not have any major competition this weekend; no other studio putting out a wide release opposite the follow-up to Jordan Peeles box office hit, Get Out.

If Us manages to go as high as $50 million this weekend, it will be a feat similar to what A Quiet Place managed last year. John Krasinskis film too had a buzzy SXSW premiere and opened in early April to $50 million. Like A Quiet Place and Get Out, Us will also likely benefit from positive word of mouth.

The reviews are in for the film and they are very positive, indicating that Jordan Peele has once again delivered. Only this time, it is a true horror film, yet one that still give you plenty to think about once you leave the theater. As the kind of film that is likely to inspire discussion, it may drive people to the theater to participate and perhaps even have repeat viewings, as star Winston Duke has recommended.

Mike Myers spoke a bit about the memorial service that he attended for his friend, which included a photo montage of Troyer and all the various places that he had visited over his life. For a man who wasn't expected to survive his teens, it was remarkable just the sort of life Troyer lived in his just short of five decades.

Mike Myers also tells a remarkable story of attending a state dinner for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the Obama administration, in which both President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau asked him how "Mini-Me" was doing when he met them. It's just one example of the way Myers says Verne Troyer impacted people. Myers says this wasn't an isolated incident as people would always ask him about Troyer. Clearly, people cared about him.

I thought, Verne just brought so much love to people, you know what I mean? It's crazy.

While people frequently feel connections to celebrities, in the case of Verne Troyer, it was something a little different. While Troyer had numerous film and TV roles over the years, none of them were nearly as memorable as his turn in the Austin Powers movies. There was something about that specific performance which made people remember him and still ask about him, even over a decade after the last time he played the role of Mini-Me.

Part of that love for Verne Troyer may have come from the way that he used his celebrity in the years since becoming famous. Mike Myers tells Jimmy Kimmel that Troyer would frequently volunteer to do charity work in the various places he would visit.

The exact details of Verne Troyer's death still aren't known. The actor was rushed to the hospital on April 3 and he passed away April 21. While he reportedly was suffering from alcohol poisoning when he was admitted to the hospital, we still don't know for sure exactly how, if at all, that played into his actual death.

While Verne Troyer may be gone, his performances are still here, which means he still will have the ability to bring love and joy to people.

Before slashers became a mainstay part of the horror genre, John Carpenter's Halloween helped to break new ground. An indie film on a small budget, the original film inspired countless scary movies, all with masked killers of their own. But there's a funny story behind Michael Myers' iconic mask from the Halloween movies: it was originally a mask of William Shatner's likeness.

Halloween was filmed when Star Trek was at the height of its popularity, with masks of William Shatner's Kirk available in stores. The art department of Halloween found one and distressed it to look more terrifying, and Michael Myers was born. It's a story horror fans love, and now the actor revealed he's actually gone out in a Michael mask, saying:

When my kids were younger, and they'd go trick-or-treating, and I would go with them, I'd wear the mask. If [people] didn't give them candy, I'd take off the mask, and blow a kiss.

Well, that's some Inception level Shatner-ing, with layers of the actor's face appearing at once. While Michael Myers is a terrifying force in the Halloween franchise, but there's also something scary about Michael removing his mask, and it being Shatner IRL winking at you.

It's funny to think that Michael Myers' appearance is actually connected to William Shatner, as the character and Halloween franchise have lasted for decades. Michael is one of the biggest villains in horror history, and his signature mask and jumpsuit have only slightly changed throughout the various sequels that followed John Carpenter's 1978 original. But he owes it all to Captain Kirk, and the toy distributor that turned Shatner's face into a mask.

The story about Michael's Halloween mask is one beloved by horror fans, but often goes under the radar for general moviegoers. In his same conversation with EW, Shatner spoke about how little he knows regarding the mask's invention. And that he makes no money from the horror franchise.

All I can tell you is, they found it somewhere in a toy store or somewhere. I don't have a piece of the film. Maybe you can negotiate it for me!

While William Shatner's face may be all over the 11 Halloween movies, but the living legend isn't getting a cut of the profits. Instead, it's just another funny anecdote to add to Shatner's already lengthy career in the public eye. And with Blumhouse now in charge of the property, that mask has been given new audience.

Indeed, the new Halloween movie brought back Michael Myers, although the mask was a bit aged and worse for the wear due to 40 years and poor storage. The look helped make Michael extra terrifying in the latest sequel, and there's already talks of yet another Halloween being developed.
