The horror genre is having a major cultural moment right now, and one of the films that has successfully ridden that wave is John Krasinski's A Quiet Place. The movie was a massive box office hit when it arrived in theaters earlier this year, and while it could have just existed as a standalone story, there have been sequel talks for months. Now, thankfully, we officially know when A Quiet Place 2 is going to get going, as Paramount Pictures has set the feature up with a May 15, 2020 release date.
Paramount has been doing some fiddling with their upcoming release calendar, and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the new established production timeline for A Quiet Place 2. If the movie is targeting an early summer release in 2020, that likely means that they are hoping to start production in the first half of next year. That's definitely what you would call "fast-tracking," and given that A Quiet Place was made for a reported $17 million and brought in $332.6 million worldwide, it's not exactly hard to see why.
Back in June producer Andrew Form confirmed that John Krasinski will definitely be a part of the production, and the new trade report adds that he is currently writing the script. The director's chair, however, remains vacant. One might hope that Krasinski will be so excited by his own idea for A Quiet Place 2 that he will want to take the reins again himself - but right now it's unclear if that will actually happen.
As for what the film could be about, there are surely multiple options on the table given the terrifying world established in the first chapter. Specifically, though, John Krasinski has pointed fans' attention towards the other settlements that his character signals in the second act of the story. Who lives there? What are their methods for surviving the sound-sensitive monsters? We may very well find out in A Quiet Place 2, along with answers regarding what ultimately happens to the Abbott family.
Unfortunately, with the exception of some zip-lipped answers from interviews in coming months, this will probably be one of the last solid bits of news we hear about A Quiet Place 2 for a while. Barring potential delays and conflicts, there probably won't be many big updates about the project until casting starts - and that process isn't likely to start until next year.
